Tony Mottram - egosurfing turned up this photographer - he's snapped everyone from the Macc Lads to Nelson Mandela.

Turning the Tide - Chomsky has a weblog.

OS X Recommended - a bit of reciprocal linking: software reviews, tips and the like from enthusiastic Mac head Jasmeet. Good, personal responses too.

Audio Lunchbox - Unrestricted. Indie Music.. Some (but not much) good music, fairly cheap, available in good quality MP3 or Ogg Vorbis format, and no DRM. Pretty good for artists, too: 65% of revenue, although there's a $40 sign-up fee, and it's not clear what exactly 'revenue' means.

A triumph of branding over service - the 'Why are BBCi URLs so rubbish?' question rears up again. I know that omitting the www will get me nowhere, and still get caught out all the time.

Damn, I always wanted to be first on the block with a post-racist blackface hip hop act, but Bubble Sisters have beaten me to it. See also, this article on the Sisters and racism in Korea.

Sound 323 - online music shop, lots of good stuff. Lots and lots, in fact.

Text on Things [via, um, Things]

RIP Tricorn Centre - Dan Hill on the passing of a fine building (well, I never had to shop there).

Quicksilver - I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but this looks like an interesting alternative to the mighty Launchbar, though it does more, and differently. [via del.icio.us]

I'm a grammar Fuhrer - nothing to crow about, given the easiness of the test, but notable because, if you are a thicko, they show you a heap of Holocaust victim corpses and say You will be the first to be thrown in the ovens. The world is a better place without you. Nice. [via Cloven Hoof]

'Useless' performance eases Little worries - no score draw and shit performance cause for muted celebration.

Peter Lindberg - Thoughts After Two Years of Blogging (FAO Mark, since we were talking about this.)

the Degree Confluence Project - The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures and stories will then be posted here. [via Glowlab]

Vinyl Data - as in ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, etc. programs on vinyl. I have a Pete Shelley album with a data track, and, thanks to a comment left by the author, I can now play the program, which consists of graphics and lyrics, along with the record. Fabulous.

Onlineblog report that MySociety.org has just secured Ł250, 000 in funding from the office of the Deputy PM. Brilliant news!

Apache Web Serving With Mac OS X - part 6 now available. Handy stuff in the whole series.

Captain Beefheart - The Peel Sessions [via newthings]

Galloway wins apology from US newspaper - documents forged. No shit.

Experience Google's new look - it's much cleaner.

Misusing Public Space [via PLSQ]

The Times out Belle De Jour for the nth time - They say it's Sarah Champion (ex-NME, edited that dreadful Disco Biscuits anthology). I couldn't read past this ridiculous sentence, though: There is growing evidence that Belle may be a fictional character who has never been a prostitute. So it's an author writing a weblog in character, and that character is pretending to be a hooker now? Idiots.

March 18, 2004

Leon McDermott - since Leon doesn't post here anymore due to being all busy with a proper job, you might want to have a peep at the Sunday Herald's pseudo-weblog of his recent writing. If only they had an RSS feed...

Prince: A look inside the elusive artist's purple reign

Cinnamonster - a new weblog featuring the wise words of my pal Nicky Agate.

March 12, 2004

Prince is being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame - had I ever given the matter any thought, I would have assumed this happened years ago. Whatever, another sign that 2004 is limbering up to be Prince's year.

George Michael shuns music industry - George plans all future releases as downloads in return for charity donations: I've been very well remunerated for my talents over the years so I really don't need the public's money - it's redistribution of musical wealth!

Hume Chose Canada Over Scotland - Tranmere striker prefers to play for his home country non-shocker! [via Nu Produkt]

iTunes Icons - Ogg Vorbis and WMA icons spotted hiding in iTunes.app/Contents/Resources - presumably a hint that support for both is planned. (Note that you can already play .ogg files in iTunes thanks to this plugin.)

CSS Problem-Solving - Dave Shea with some useful pointers.

The mighty Tranmere Rovers play Milwall tomorrow, in the FA Cup. Pray for us, reader, pray for us!

Warning: Blogs Can Be Infectious - The most-read webloggers aren't necessarily the ones with the most original ideas, say researchers at Hewlett-Packard Labs. - you don't say? Most 'prominent' sites I read come off like a digest of the stuff puny unknown weblogs have been discussing all week. [via 2lmc Spool - Lord knows whether that's a prominent weblog, or even a weblog at all.]

March 04, 2004

Public Whip - a wealth of information on and analysis of MPs' voting records, including a fascinating Possible Friends feature, which guesses at possible political alliances on the basis of similar voting patterns. Brilliant.

PopNose, Fluxblog and Soul Sides - all worth checking for MP3s. I like the Fluxblog model of using .Mac to host the files. (There's some crunk available at my .Mac page)

Russellmania shows no sign of abating - now our beloved Arthur is profiled in the New Yorker (am I misguided in thinking that's an odd place to find him?)

Soviet Photography at the Fotomuseum Winterthur. Rodchenko just rules. [via New Things]

Hikaru dorodang are lustrous spheres made from mud and elbow grease. I want (somebody else to make me) one. [via Ben "Vasari" Hammersly]

Britain's fattest areas revealed. Glasgow is the 12th skinniest city in the UK - presumably because the chips 'n' Bru diet kills folk off before they have the chance to fatten up. Either that or I single-handedly skewed the stats with my preposterous physique!

DIY iPod Battery Pack - easy enough to make, handy on long trips.

Downing Street Says... - Every day the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman meets with a small coterie of political journalists known as 'the lobby' for a topical chat, or 'briefing'. We've built a site that lets you: Read summaries of these briefings, add your own comments, find what other websites are saying about the issues discussed. [via blackbeltjones]
